Defensive

The prompt for PAD day eleven was to write a “defensive” poem. As a substitute teacher, I see kids from all walks of life and the defensive ones often steal my heart. This is for them.

Restless

He pulls up his hood

swaggers with blustering bravado

warding off all attempts

to draw him in

safeguarding his heart

She slumps in her seat

arms covered with sharpie graffiti

circumventing all conversation

silencing any advances

protecting her spirit

Across the room they gaze

eyes meet for a moment

a sly smile curves his lips

her eyes reciprocate

serendipity in the air
