Thoughts on Pilgrim’s Progress, Part the Second – #7

p. 264-265

Christiana, her sons, and Mercy, are all staying in the home of Mr. Watchful for a while. There, Prudence asks Christiana if she could catechize, or teach, her children. Christina consents, so Prudence begins with the youngest son, James.

The first two questions she asks James are who made him and who saved him. James replied:”God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Ghost.”

I love his response when she asks him how.

“God the Father by His grace

God the Son by His righteousness, death, blood, and life.

God the Holy Ghost by His illumination, His renovation, and His preservation.”

The definition of illumination is the process of making something easier to understand. This should be our prayer as Christians, that God would give us illumination to understand His Word.

One definition of renovation is to bring new vigor (drive, vitality, strength) to somebody. This, too, should be our prayer, especially when we have strayed or become fearful.

Lastly, preservation is protection from harm; or the maintenance of something in an unchanged condition.

I love when our pastor says the following words as a blessing and reminder to us. May they be a blessing to you today:

The Lord bless you and keep you;
The Lord make His face shine upon you,
And be gracious to you;  Numbers 6:24-25
